Elephantasy ’09 -päivätapahtuman kirkkaimpana tähtenä on Guyanassa vuonna 1955 syntynyt mutta Iso-Britanniassa varttunut dub-reggaen legenda Mad Professor. Hän on uransa aikana julkaissut kymmeniä arvostettuja levyjä omissa nimissään ja yhteistyössä useiden reggaen ykkösnimien kanssa (mm. Lee “Scratch” Perry, Sly & Robbie, Horace Andy yms.)

Reggaevaikutteidensa ohella Mad Professor on tunnettu erityisesti No Protection -dubmiksauslevystään (1995) Massive Attackille, joka vierailee ensi lokakuussa Helsingin Jäähallissa. Mad Professor esiintyy laulajatar Princess Din ja miehen oppipoikiin lukeutuvan dub-velho Joe Ariwan kanssa Alppipuiston illassa, joka tulee täyttymään raskaista bassoista, syvältä luotaavista kaikuelementeistä ja muista dub-efekteistä.

The brightest star of the Elephantasy ’09 day-event will be the dub reggae legend Mad Professor, who was born in 1955 in Guyana but has lived in UK since he turned 13 years old. He has released dozens of critically acclaimed albums as a solo artist and as collaborating with several top reggae artists (such as Lee “Scratch” Perry, Sly & Robbie, Horace Andy…)

In addition to his reggae projects, Mad Professor is widely known especially for his legendary dub mix album No Protection (1995) for Massive Attack, who will be performing next October at Helsinki Jäähalli. Mad Professor will be live on stage at Elephantasy ’09 along with talented vocalist Princess Di and his dub apprentice Joe Ariwa. Besides them, the night will be filled up with heavy bass, deep echoes and other inspiring dub effects.

Gabro & Frank and the Irrationals kuulostaa kuin aikuiseksi muusikoksi kasvanut hiphop-stara kohtaisi dancehallin vessassa pubirockin ja dramaattisen 60-luvun popin. Tarkka, monipuolisesti rakennettu soundimaailma suorastaan vilisee viittauksia historiaan ja tyylikertauksiin – kaikki tämän hetken funkbiittiin paketoituna.

Häpeilemättömäksi tanssimusiikiksi tituleeratun ryhmän taustalta löytyy ehkä hivenen tunnetumpi Robert’s Street Fighters -kokoonpano. Vaikutteikseen combo itse nimeää muun muassa Raptorin ja Guns’n’Rosesin. Vaikka tämä ehkä kuulostaa ironiselta heitolta, kannattaa livekeikka tsekata musiikillisesti tosissaan. Ryhmä todella on kuunnellut sekä hoppilevynsä että brittipopin klassikkonsa.

Gabro & Frank and the Irrationals sound like a grown-up hip hop star meeting pub rock and dramatic 60’s pop in the toilet of the dancehall. The meticulous and versatile sound world of the band is filled with references to history and many styles - all wrapped up with a contemporary funk beat.

Labeled as shameless dance music, the band is based on the slightly more known Robert’s Street Fighters. The group has named Raptori and Guns’n’Roses as some of their influences. This may sound like an ironic joke, but seriously, this gig is something significant. The guys have really listened to their hip hop and brit pop classics.

SUHINATORS WITH PALEFACE, PAPA ZAI & RENEGADE

Suomireggaen valovoimaisimpiin ryhmiin lukeutuva Suhinators hurmasi yleisönsä jo tupaten täydellä Funky Elephant Warm-Up -klubilla Virgin Oilissa 23.5. Yleisön pyynnöstä nyt kuullaan vähintään yhtä säkenöivät encoret Helsingin Alppipuistossa Elephantasy ’09 -tapahtumassa. Tällä kertaa mikrofonin äärellä mainetta niittäneet vokalisit Paleface, Papa Zai ja Renegade. Jah bless!

Suhinators – a rebel reggae outfit from Helsinki, backing some of the most explosive vocal talent in Finnish reggae. Founded in 2003, Suhinators has gained notoriety on the scene in Finland for their live shows, unpredictable take-no-prisoners celebrations of dance, sweat, musical entertainment and revolutionary consciousness. Styles ranging from rootical rockers to dynamite dancehall are all held together by the riot reggae sound of Suhinators crew.

HELSINKI ROOFTOP NINJAS

Helsinki Rooftop Ninjas yhdistelee omaperäisellä tavalla musiikissaan delta bluesia ja hiphopia live-muusikoiden ja deejiiden kautta. Amerikkalaissyntyisen Alaska Kalasen johtama innovatiivinen ryhmä on esiintynyt viime vuosina myös nimellä The Soul Hustlers mm. Virossa, Liettuassa ja Japanissa sekä Karjaan Faces Etnofestivalilla.

Alaska Kalanen tekee vuodessa noin 100 keikkaa sooloartistina tai eri kokoonpanoissa. Hän on keikkaillut mm. Don Johnson Big Bandin, Felix Zengerin sekä Jaakon & Jayn kanssa. Toinen Alppipuistossa nähtävistä ydinjäsenistä, Hereill, on levysoitinvirtuoosi ja hallitsee musiikkityylien laajan kirjon. Hereill pyörittää myös viikottain levyjä mm. "Lowpoint" radio-ohjelmassa Bassoradiolla. Live-kokoonpanolle antaa lisäväriä tällä kertaa myös kontrabasisti Jaska Prepula.

The Helsinki Rooftop Ninjas bring together DJs and live performers while combining delta blues and hip hop in the most original way. The US-born Alaska Kalanen leads this innovative group of talented musicians, who have performed during the last years also by the name of The Soul Hustlers in Estonia, Lithuania, Japan as well as at different venues in Finland.

Alaska Kalanen performs around 100 gigs per year either as solo or in different line-ups. He has toured with Don Johnson Big Band, Felix Zenger, and Jaakko & Jay, among others. Another core member who will be seen at Alppipuisto is Hereill, a vinyl virtuoso with skills spanning many styles. He spins records also on Bassoradio’s weekly programme Lowpoint. Contrabassist Jaska Prepula will add more color this time to their live set.
